Chinese Sweet and Sour Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and soy sauce until well combined.
  2. Set aside.
  3. In another small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in water to create a slurry.
  4. Set aside.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  6. Add minced garlic, minced ginger, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using).
  7. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  8. Pour in the ketchup mixture and bring to a simmer.
  9. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. Stir the cornstarch slurry once more to ensure it’s well combined, then pour it into the saucepan.
  11. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes.
  12. Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool slightly before serving.
  13. Use the Chinese Sweet and Sour Sauce as a dip for your favorite appetizers or as a sauce for stir-fries.
