Creamy Cheese Sauce for Fries

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes, until the mixture turns a light golden color.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, making sure there are no lumps.
  4. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese.
  6. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
  7. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika (if using).

Cheese Sauce for Fries

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, plus 2-3 tablespoons as needed
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 4 ounces medium cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (such as Frank’s)

Instructions:

  1. Add the butter to a small saucepan over medium heat and melt.
  2. Whisk in the flour to form a paste and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring often to avoid burning.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of milk to the flour mixture and whisk constantly until the mixture has thickened up to the consistency of gravy.
  4. Whisk in the garlic powder, onion powder, and mustard powder.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat and add the shredded cheese one handful at a time, stirring with each handful, until smooth and melted.
